The flag of Colombia has represented Gran Colombia, and their freedom. It shows this by highlighting three colors: Yellow, blue, and red. Yellow can symbolize Colombia’s gold, blue can symbolize the seas on Colombia’s shores, and red can symbolize the blood in the war. This is only one representation though, as they can also represent justice (yellow), loyalty and vigilance (blue), and valor and generosity (red). They can also simply represent the principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Colombia’s flag is also very similar to the flag of Ecuador, as Ecuador's has the same base with the coats of arms. The current flag was first adopted on August 7, 1819, but it was changed in 1834. The stripes were changed from horizontal to vertical, and an eight-pointed white star was added. Another later variation also included the coats of arms for political purposes. Finally, the current flag was reinstated on December 10, 1861, and has remained the same since.
